The fortification was possibly built during the first settlement in the region of Cambados. The fortification is a national monument and dates from the second half of the 10th century, but was destroyed betweeen 1466 and 1470 during the Irmandiño revolts. The chapel was founded in 1515 by the judicial vicar Fernando Montemayor. The exquisite portal is decorated in Cisneros style and has images of St Michael and St James at the bottom, Moorish elements in the arch, and a scene of the Annunciation in the frieze. The cornice is of Arab style with Gothic style arches and a Calvary scene in the middle. The first stone of the building was laid by the king Alfonso VII of Castile in 1179 and the building was expanded in the 16th century thanks to the help of the kings Charles I and Philip II. The refectory, built in 1215, is the jewel of the monastery and one of the best examples in Europe.
